Introduction: A Complex Question
The question, “What is a hero?” is much more complex than a simple definition we find in the dictionary. The first definition of hero in Merriam-Webster is: a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability. At FIRE, we think it goes far deeper than this. Heroes have common traits, heroes have common practices, and heroes are always pursuing the same goal.
HEROIC TRAITS
A hero is shaped from the inside out. These are the traits that form the heart and character of a hero. This list will grow over time, because heroism is a lifelong pursuit, not a fixed state.

All true heroes seek the truth—with their heart, mind, soul, and body.
The Hero’s Pursuit
Every real hero is on a lifelong pursuit — the pursuit of truth, goodness, and wholeness. Heroism is not simply a matter of personality or behavior. It is a commitment of heart, mind, soul, and body toward what is true and good.
Heart
The Hero’s Courage
A hero’s heart is oriented toward courage, compassion, and moral conviction. They feel deeply, love sacrificially, and run toward what others run from.
Mind
The Hero’s Reason
A hero thinks clearly, seeks wisdom, and grounds beliefs in truth. Their mind is disciplined, teachable, and dedicated to understanding before speaking.
Soul
The Hero’s Purpose
A hero lives from a deeper calling — to serve, to protect, to learn, to build, to redeem. Their soul anchors them when circumstances shake them.
Body
The Hero’s Action
A hero doesn’t remain in contemplation; they step into action. They show up, stand firm, move toward need, and bring their physical presence into moments that demand courage.
